SOURCES OF WATER POLLUTION

In the US, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972, better known as the Clean Water Act provided the impetus for a number of programs to - [See Clean Water Act Update by American Geological Institute (AGI)]

NONPOINT
SOURCES
Currently, nonpoint inputs are a major source of water pollution to rivers, lakes and coastal waters. Major sources of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) include runoff from farms and cities, acid rain and airborne pollutants. Excess P and N has profound impacts including toxic algal blooms, oxygen depletion, loss of aquatic vegetation, fish kills, and loss of biodiversity.

GLOBAL ASPECTS WATER POLLUTION BY AGRICULTURE

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Water sector policy review and strategy formulation: A general framework, FAO Land and Water Bulletin 3 World Bank UNDP (1995)

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations recognises that poor farming practices can pollute surface and groundwater.

Poor farming practices can lead to soil erosion and sediment buildup, while inefficient irrigation schemes can cause waterlogging and salinization that destroys soil fertility and poisons groundwater with concentrated salts and minerals.

Completing the cycle, the use of wastewater and polluted surface and groundwater contaminates crops and transmits diseases to consumers and farmworkers alike.

The Aral Sea Basin is a tragic example of how deeply flawed farming practices have led to water contamination and related health problems.
